Research Blog #8 - Case

This details what students can do from now on forward.

Colleges can implement effective resources to effectively engage and help their students prosper in meaningful environments. In a study conducted at Amarillo College, effective college resources and assistance was demonstrated. Amarillo College’s collaboration with non profit organizations to raise funds for their students resulted in a significantly higher retention and graduation rates. Amarillo implemented strategies such as removing life barrier, providing an accelerated learning platform and presenting a deep and systemic culture of caring towards their students and prepares them for success." (Lowery-Hart 1). All of these strategies resulted in positive effects towards all students as shown below,

"In five years, AC has seen a 75% growth rate in first-generation students graduating with a degree/certificate (21% growth rate in transfer) and a 64% growth rate in Pell students graduating (29% growth rate in transfer). AC course success rates (A-C pass rates) have increased 110% for Hispanic students, 112% for African American students and 108% for all students." (Lowery-Hart 1).

The clear effects of a college that promotes grants from within school has been shown through this study. With the combination of effective financial resources and effective learning environment from the school, students are more likely to be set up for success. A simple “culture of caring”  was enough to bring about an improved three year completion rate from 22% to 56%, (Lowery-Hart 1). College across the nation should be searching to implement a more inclusive culture and should look to support their students financially. By cultivating a culture that emphasizes care, colleges will be able to benefit as a result of their student’s success; not to mention, the benefits that the student will receive. The students should be as valued as the college itself and doing so leads to thriving parties.
